well, admittedly I'm looking for my roots.

correct. jan is my name and when I'm messing around with local area networks, as I do for a living, I drop the last six letters in my surname (or is that seven or eight? maybe if you research those dots and rings deep enough).

the mename command seems to be left out - is that right? anyhow, I'm a great linux fan... hey, that rhymes with jan! so I have a whole host of hosts running Red Hat defending my network from Black Hats.

in case 'you wonder') use of lowercase is TRADITIONAL when it comes to unix systems ;;
also traditionally, the user prompt is $ to remind the user how much unix system used to cost, BUT if you think about it, only $MONEY is the value of MONEY. and never more than my 2 cents worth.
